Thermostat turns lights on and off

My electricity went out the other day and it's back on. The problem I'm having is when I want to turn on the heat from the thermostat, the lights in the room go off. It's freezing here and I can't turn on the heat.

Any ideas here?

I'm assuming you have electric heat. You flip a breaker when the heat comes on?

All breakers are on... The thermostat upstairs is off, but when I the thermostat to heat - on, the electric on the first floor turns off. Same with if I try to turn on the central air using that thermostat. So I have to keep the thermostat to Fan which runs all day now because I can't turn the heat on (cold off) or cold on (heat off) or the electric will go off.

It's acting like a switch and all of this since the electric went off the other day.

It definitely shouldn't do this.

I think you have a dead short somewhere. Call the POCO and have them check your service entrance.

You also might want to try to turn ALL your breakers off then on again and check for anything odd or difficult to switch.

I think you had a surge and burned up something inside your panel.

You either have an open neutral or more likely one of your hot lines is out. The lights a back feeding though another 240 volt device.

Turn off all you double pole breakers and see if the lights still stay on.
