tapping off existing outlet box

I would like to tap off an existing outlet.
Previously I used a hammer and a stick to knock the old box out let it fall inside the wall and install a remodel box. I was wondering if that is really necessary and is there anyway I could have just feed the wire out from the original box. Since this time I am not trying to grab a wire into the box but only exiting it.

You removed the old box and installed a new one in the same location? Unnecessary. Why not just use a fish tape?
