T12 to T5 Ballast Replacement

Can I just change out a T12 ballast to a T8 or T5 ballast? Is it as simple as just replacing the ballast or do I need to replace the entire fixture. I know that you can bypass the ballast with the new T5 conversion kit, but they are expensive and I would prefer to just change out the ballast and get new bulbs.

I am not entirely sure, but I don't think T5 bulbs will even fit a T12 fixture.

T12 to T5 Ballast Replacement

Going from T12 to T8, just replace the ballast. The lamps will fit.

From T12 to T5 you will need to change the ballast and the lamp holders. The T5 uses a 5mm pin spacing as compared to the 13mm spacing on the T8 and T12 lamps.

Unless there is something special about your fixtures, you can often get new fixtures for the same price as the ballast or conversion kits.

If you replace the ballast, you need to double check the wiring of the new ballast vs existing. Sometimes you need to modify the wiring to match the new ballast.

Most older fixtures will need a few lamp holders replaced anyway.
Sometimes all of them.

Like how they are installed into finished surfaces or just look cool.

Conveniently... the new ballasts will have wiring diagrams on them.

Yeah, and I'll bet the OP can't read them.

99% of the time the answer is no they will NOT fit on T12/T8 luminaires at all due the T5 lamps are metric sized not in inches at all.

Merci,
