Switched receptacle wiring.

Can I run a single hot lead to/from a light switch?
Or do I need both hot and neutral at the junction box?
I'm wiring a switched receptacle in a bedroom.
I have a memory of reading here that code has changed so that both hot and neutral are needed now. Not sure if I fabricated that memory or not and I don't know how to keyword that to find the thread.
TIA

I assume you mean a switch loop where both black and white are used for power and switched power. There is a new change to the nec that requires a neutral in the switch box but you may be exempt from that with a local code amendment. IMO it's a silly requirement for existing single family residential property.

Thanks, that's it. Without that terminology my searches were poor.
My city adopts electrical code as it's introduced.
I was planning on running 12/2. I guess I could use 12/3 and cap the neutral in the box. Would that satisfy requirement?
