Switch connections
 
I'm replacing a switch and a GFCI outlet previously wired in one junction box in my bath. I would like to add one more switch and purchase a larger junction box. One switch will control a light, a second a fan and then the third a GFCI outlet. I've replaced a few switches in my home already so I'm comfortable doing a single and follow all the safety procedures however I never replaced three switches on one junction box. I noticed the previous two were wired together. How would I go about wiring two switches and a GFCI outlet?

The key is to label all the connections as they are now so that they can go back together correctly in the new box.

Cut the hole for the 3 gang box before you remove the 2 gang. This will give you more room to work.

You will need to add another pigtail to the incoming hot to feed the new switch. The new cable to the fan will get the white and grounds tied into the other whites and ground in the switch box. The black going to the fan will go to the other screw on the new switch.

Ground all devices.

There is one power cable coming in. The GFCI does have a “load” and “line” both having hot and white on each side. The switch is a 20Amp Class A.

Also I'm replacing the drywall so a new gang box is going to be installed. Does it matter which type of gang box I use? I need one to accommodate three switches as you stated. Does it matter if it's the blue box type that nails to the stud or secures to the drywall?

If you have the drywall out of your way it's best to use the nail on boxes. :)

3 gang plastic nail on box.

Tie all (bare) grounds together and leave 3 pigtails for the devices.

Install 3 pigtails on the power in (black).

Tie all neutrals together except for the GFCI load. Install a (white) pigtail for the GFCI line in.

You should end up with 3 black pigtails (120v power to switches and GFCI),
one white pigtail (to GFCI line),
two black switch legs (sends power to lights/fan)
and a black and white (GFCI load)
