Sump pump wiring

I was at a friends' house who is in the process of finishing his basement. His sump is GFCI protected, and that circuit also feeds a couple of downstream receptacles.

1. I know GFCI on a sump outlet is an area of controversy....latest thoughts there?

2. Does the sump need it's own dedicated circuit?

Thanks.

I always put a sump pump on its own circuit, you don't want the pump breaker to trip because you overloaded the circuit with some other appliance. As to GFI, it is in the basement, so code requires GFI if I am not mistaken. The only issue is that GFI outlets are twitchier about tripping in the event of a fault, and you may not like to take the risk that the pump goes dead in the middle of a rain event because the GFI goes off. Assuming it is code, as I think it is, to use GFI outlets in the basement, the only code compliant answer is to install a GFI and live with the risk that it trips.

What Daniel said, and be sure you add the rider to your homeowners insurance policy that covers water damage. Many policies don't.
