Summer vacation - Main off?

Hi all,

this summer I will be away for one month, is there anything against switching the main breaker circuit off?

Anything I should pay particular attention too?

My neighbor will come and see if everything is fine on a regular basis.

Thanks
Alex

If the main breaker is red, do NOT turn it off. You'll likely not be able to turn it back on again.

No sump pump, no alarm system and the breaker is black, it is an ordinary panel.

What's a red breaker for?

Thanks

Can I ask why you feel the need to shut the power off? What precautions do you take while you are sleeping in this house? I would worry more about a water pipe breaking. Shut off the water main and water heater.

Notice I didn't say hot water heater.

Make sure to have the water heater heat the water to at least 140 degrees before using it again, you may get Legionnaires disease.

What about your freezer and fridge if there's no power?

I used to unplug every single thing in the house and flip the water heater breaker off, to not waste electric if I was gone.

vln: I never thought about Legionnaires Disease! Would you recommend turning the water heater up to 140 even if that's not what you normally set it at? I think I keep mine at 130.

Well, simply because in 4 weeks you save between 150 and 200 bucks and I do not want to switch every single appliance off.

Before leaving I always leave them empty, there is no point in keeping them on.

Thanks

Yes, I would. It is especially important on electric water heaters. Or in places with extreme climate.

If everything in your home is turned off your little usage is going to be minimal if any at all. You certainly aren't going to use $150-$200 worth of electricity was no one there using anything. I certainly agree with the suggestion to turn off the water but I really wouldn't bother turning off electricity.
