I believe this diagram is somewhere on this site. We should ask the moderator to make an electrical subtopic call Three Way

Thanks for the diagram. That is pretty much what I did except I ran the black power in to the black switch wire. The white switch wire became the switched hot. I hooked up a light to it and it worked like a champ. Any concerns? Thanks for all the help.

What you did was incorrect, you can't have two whites at a fixture, change the splice.

What is the problem with 2 whites at a fixture? Is is that code says you can't or is there a safety issue?

Code says the white wire cannot be used as the return conductor in a switch loop.

200.7 Use of Insulation of a White or Gray Color or with Three Continuous White Stripes.

(2) Where a cable assembly contains an insulated conductor for single-pole, 3-way or 4-way switch loops and the conductor with white or gray insulation or a marking of three continuous white stripes is used for the supply to the switch but not as a return conductor from the switch to the switched outlet. In these applications, the conductor with white or gray insulation or with three continuous white stripes shall be permanently reidentified to indicate its use by painting or other effective means at its terminations and at each location where the conductor is visible and accessible.

Strange 3 way switch loop

If I switch them, should it still work, or being that is how it was originally wired, should I leave good enough alone?

It's only a technical violation, it will work in practice correctly.

Electricity doesn't care what color the insulation is

It is still a violation, though.

Seriously, it will take you less than 5 mins to correct the issue...

Take the black and white and flip them. Easy fix

Strange 3 way switch loop

So then, my question again, do I need to change wires at the switch or just at the fixture?

take the black going to the switch out of the wirenut and put the white there and put black tape on it and take the black from the switch to the light. It'll save you a ton of trouble if you ever have to troubleshoot it down the road.
