Stapling required for fished new wires?

I'm planning on installing a new light fixture in the dining room that will require an additional wire to be fished up the wall from the existing switch location. Does this new wire have to be stapled to the stud before coming into the switch box? Or can it simply hang loose in the wall cavity?

The "Electrical Code Simplified (Ontario)" mentions that it's supposed to be stapled within a foot of the box and every 1.5m of the run; but that would require opening up the wall... does this Rule 12-510 only apply to new house construction?
