That's interesting. I live in Georgia and I have never seen a house around here that has a landing at the door going from the main floor to the basement. Also all of the unfinished basement stairs that I have seen here have open risers.

True, but sometimes "doing it right" goes beyond just meeting code.

I would install it on three way switches.
