sprinkler head looking thing

I have 2 sprinkler head looking things in the basement of our new house. It is a foil cone with a flat piece of foil that looks like a sprinkler (fire protection) head assembly. It obvioulsy isnt fire protection because there is no water supply. there are 2 small gauge wires coming out of the back of them. I have no idea what they are for. can anyone enlighten me....first post by the way

Are the wires connected to anything such as an alarm panel. They could be rate of rise heat sensors or smoke detectors.

it is not connected to any alarm panel. I just looked at the back of it and chased the wire. There were 4 wires black and white we on the same terminal and red and green were on another. the wires only connected to the other piece and there was no current in the wires. Is it safe to say that they have been abandoned or were used previously for somthing else. would a picture help?

Only way to find out, is to trace the wires back under the insulation. I would not be surprised if they are not heat sensors for the Smoke/Fire detectors in the house. Also, how do you not know if there is not a panel? Do you own, or are you renting the property?

I followed the wires. the two sensors are only connected to each other. they are not connected to the smoke detectors as the smoke & Co detectors are battery operated and not hard wired.

I believe those are old ionization-type fire detectors. I remember some of them had the capacity to connect together so that when one alarm goes off, so do all the others. Kinda like a stand-alone partial-house fire detection system, if that makes any sense...

OTOH, I could be as full of stuff as a Christmas turkey...
