I will be building a small barn first, then the house. The meter socket will be installed on the barn (from underground) when it is ready, and stay there permanently. Ultimately, I want to get all 200 amps to the basement main panel. The future needs of the barn would be well supplied with a 50 amp panel. What is the best way to accomplish this? Is there a product available that could install after the meter socket (inside the barn) and take 50 amps to a barn breaker panel and 200 amps to the house?
This is an enclosure that has the meter, a main breaker, about 6-8 spaces for regular breakers, and feed-through lugs that feed out the full 200 amps that can go on to the house.
You would use the breaker spaces to give you temp power and to feed your 50 amp barn panel from.
Every major manufacturer makes them.
Sometimes I feel like if I answer any more questions it is like someone trying to climb over a fence to jump off a bridge and me giving them a boost.
