It depending on the size of solar panels however AFAIK most solar panels I have dealt with it they are ran in conduit and have a disconnection switch as well.
The best answer is you check with your local inspector for the latest informaton related to the solar panels.
And if you going to tie with the POCO grids you will need a net metering device or other means and have POCO involded with this.
The last one I just have one sometime back it is a 100 KW solar panels it cover pretty good section of roof decking and one nice big plus that it actually reduce the amout of A/C need to keep the place cool as well.
the systems i have seen and wired have exposed wires from the panels until they enter the building. then into j box and conduit to inverters (inside).
