I need your opinion. A man installed one 45 watt panel to six 6 volt deep cell batteries. In my opinion a 45 watt panel cant keep up with keeping the six 6 volt volt batteries charged at 12.1 "50%" and that a reading one hour after dark. This has been going on for a little over six months, you cant have a 45 watt panel with six 6 volt batteries, its too much, in my opinion, for a 45 watt panel to charge six 6 volt batteries. Is this true or not?

Over the last 6 to 8 months with this type of setup the batteries are setting at 11.1 an hour after dark. I think the batteries have been too low for too long and I think they could be ruined, is that true or not in your opinion?

Charge contoller and inverter take very minimal current use on batteries true or false?

Is 12.1 50%, 12.7 full charge, one hour after dark, is this good or not?

How many panels and watts do you need to keep six 6 volt batteries at 12.7, full charge, one hour after dark?

She was also told that one 45 watt panel should get 5 hours of uninterupted prime time light hours to get 220 watts of power?

I'm sorry for all the questions, I am doing this for my mother in TX she has no electric so I get on and ask the questions for her.

why would a 6 volt battery read 12.7 volts? Obviously a 6 volt battery would be half of that.

to a 45 watt panel being large enough or not:
It would depend on if you used the batteries or not and if so, how much you used them. You need to calculate how much power she is using to know how much power you need to produce. It is also going to matter when you use the batteries. If you use them overnight, you would have all day to charge. If you use them real heavy an hour before sundown, it would require a lot of PV power to charge the batteries before sundown.

It takes almost no power to maintain a full charge on lead acid batteries with no load - a 1W panel would be fine. The panel needs to be sized to the load, not the batteries. The batteries are also sized to the load.

With that said, it sounds like either the panel or the batteries are too small for the load. 12.1V is a very low charge for a lead acid battery. Check the voltage at minimum charge (late in the day but while still sunny) - it should be 13.8 or so. Also check it at peak discharge (morning just before dawn) - it should be at least 12V. If the peak voltage is low, the panel is not producing enough power to keep up with the load. If the peak voltage is OK but the minimum voltage is too low, then the batteries are too small and don't store enough energy to last the night.

11.1v is flat for a 12v battery,
So load is too high or charge is not enough,
I suspect the later.
I dont know the amp/hour capacity of your batteries,
but a standard car battery is around 200ahs.
so for six batteries thats 1200ahs.
One 45w panel is no where near enough.
Five hours per battery would be needed,
the best you can hope for is 8hrs.
You would need at least six panels minimum.
A fully charged battery should be minimum 12.6v on load.
Most good systems will have a battery capacity of 200% of expected load.
