Smoke detectors should be replaced every 6 to 10 years. (Manufacturer's recommendation)
I was changing the ones at my mother's house yesterday, and thought that I should post this here as a reminder.

Also, they now make smokes with sealed 10 year batteries, so now you dont have to remember to change them twice a year.
