Smoke detector interchangeability

Have to replace 1 of 5 smoke detectors in my home. They are 120V wired units with interconnection to each other. Wired with 14/3 cable with 120v on the black/white and the red connected to all the yellows to the smoke detectors. I can not find the same brand locally but I see plenty of other brands that are listed as 120 volt with interconnection feature (they have the same yellow lead to connect to the red of the cable. Question? Can I mix and match brands as long as they are 120V and can be interconnected?

I believe that most detector instructions will say not to mix with different brands.

Remember, the reliable life span is only 10 years. Replace them all now and date the back so you can keep track of their age.

I agree in spades. We don't work for the fire alarm manufactuers. In my case my agreement is based on exp.

I agree with Jim on both the mix issue and the ten year replace em..

If the detectors are more than ten years old replace them all or if less than ten years and if you can't get a confirmation from the mfg on compatability.

I didnt see you mention a carbon monoxide detector in those five.. If you dont have one currently, thats a good excuse to upgrade to a dual smoke/carbon monoxide detector.

Well worth the money spent....
