Smoke detector ceiling position

Does it matter where on a ceiling the smoke detector is or can it be anywhere?

(most case almost anywhere but keep it about 12 inches from the edge of the wall.)

Merci,
Marc

(Sure it will work just fine in the middle as well ., That is a good spot as well.)

Merci,
Marc

Yes. FEMA says
Quote:

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, including the basement. Many fatal fires begin late at night or in the early morning. For extra safety, install smoke alarms both inside and outside sleeping areas. Since smoke and many deadly gases rise, installing your smoke alarms at the proper level will provide you with the earliest warning possible. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
The NYC Dept. of Buildings seems to have improved on FEMA's instructions and included more detail.

NEVER
Place a smoke alarm in or near a kitchen where it will go off too easily.
Place a smoke alarm in or near a moist place.
Place a smoke alarm directly in front of heating or cooling ducts.
Place a smoke alarm too close to windows, doors, ceiling fans where drafts could interfere with the detector’s operation.

When in doubt, read the instructions that came with the smoke detector. Mine say to keep the detector at least 6" from any wall.

Bonjour Marc.

Merci,
Marc
