smelly lightbulbs

Two of the three lightbulbs in my son's ceiling fan burned out so I replaced them with the same bulbs, 60watt ceiling fan bulbs made by GE. He says they smell, possibly an electrical burning smell. I don't have the greatest sense of smell, but I thought they smelled bad as well. Could there be some defect in the bulbs that would make them smell bad?

Turn the lights off and check the sockets. Sometimes the heat from the lamps can melt the plastic sockets.

The sockets looked fine. I replaced the bulbs again and no smell, so I guess the other bulbs just had something wrong with them. Thanks for the reply.
