Size and location of breaker box

I have a 1 bedroom apt. (900 sq. ft.) in NYC and the breaker box is in the bathroom. I am being told by the electrician that in order to bring the box up to code, it has to be relocated and cannot be in a bedroom or closet. Is this true? Also, he says the size of the new box is 24" high and 14.5" wide. That seems awfully big to me. Can anyone confirm if this is true and accurate for New York City? Thanks.

It's basically true. Panels cannot be installed in a clothes closet or near combustible materials. The panel also needs a set working clearance surrounding it...30" wide and 36" deep...the 30" does not have to be centered on the panel. Bedrooms are fair game in my area, but I don't know your layout.

The panel's physical size seems about right. Most are a full stud space wide...14 1/2".

OCPD,s may not be located in clothes closets or bathrooms per the NEC. Bedroom prohibition may be a local requirement, not NEC.

Locate in a hall and hang a picture over it. Size sounds right for a typical 100 amp panel.
