Single Pole Illuminated Light Switch

when you go from a flip switch to those decora illuminated light switch, do you keep the orientation (top or bottom) of the black wires the same?

Unless the new switches have terminals specifically marked LINE and LOAD, it shouldn't matter.

McSteve, it's the leviton model. so if you switch the black wires, the switch and orange LED will still work?

Correct. On that switch, either wire can be on either terminal.

And just so you know, if you use CFL bulbs, they may not work properly with that switch, they might flicker occasionally when the switch is off.

so regardless of how the black wires are connected to either terminal, the orange led will always turn on when switch is off?

also, i see some switches wrapped in electrical tape...is that always necessary?

Correct. And no, the tape isn't necessary.
