short circuit. reset the breaker, but no power

I tried to replace the receptacle outlet without turn off the breaker (bad idea). The cutter accidently touch the ground while I try to cut the hot wire. At the moment they touched, there is a loud popping sound from the outlet. I reset every breaker (because the panel is poorly label) but there is still no power for that outlet. Any one know what might cause no power from the outlet with the stupid mistake I made?

Sometimes lessons are learned the hard way. Go to the blackboard and write 50 times: I will not work on Hot circuits.

You are going to have to be a detective and start hunting.
- new outlet, right?

Some breakers are not all that far out of position when tripped. Run your hand down the row and feel to see if they line up.

Some brands of breakers require you to turn them to off to reset them.

Thats how I find the breaker. I cant be bothered looking around the box for the right one. I just touch the black and white together until it trips and I hear the "pop". Im a hack though

I hope you don't have one of those never trip breakers like FP.

Is the circuit you are adding on to protected by a GFCI? in which case you could reset the breaker but the GFCI will also need resetting.
