ser/seu cable outside

We are running wire from a main panel in our basement to a subpanel in an attached garage that will supply power to the garage and addition that we just built. if we are going to use SEC cable from the main box in an unfinished basement to the sub panel in the garage with a 20 foot trip outside along the wall of the house and garage (it's a really old house so no way to run the wires through the walls/ceilings of the house). our question is can you run the SEC cable outside just attached to the wall or does it have to go through conduit to meet code.
I don't want to spend the money and time and then fail the inspection. I could not find if it was allowed or not in the NEC book.

I really appreciate any help you can give us.

What is SEC cable? You will need to use 4 conductor SER and yes, it may be installed exposed. Probably will look like heck but it is allowed under the NEC unless local ordinances say otherwise.

Thanks, it was a typo! The cable will run behind bushes so it will be hard to see.
Thanks for the quick answer!!
