I know the code, does anyone know the logic in securing romex to the studs in walls? It makes it impossible to pull or make slight modifications to the box location and I would think it makes contact with screws for shelves or pictures more likely (if slightly off course). If really necessary, wouldn't an offset of some type, securing the cable 1" from the stud be a better idea? (just wondering)
they do it just so you can't do anything with it later.

It is to prevent the cable from getting caught between the rock and stud or being allowed to flop into a place where you might run a screw or nail into it.
the point is to not run it slightly off course (quality installations are important) and you can leave some slack at a box to allow for a limited "oops".
