safe wiring?

I replaced 2 old receptacles with 2 new ones and then the push-button breaker wouldn't reset. I had placed a ground wire from the metal outlet box to each new receptacle. the boxes already have ground wires from the cable in the wall. The breaker finally reset when I removed the ground wires that I connected from the outlet box to the receptacle. Is this safe?

If the boxes are grounded, then running a wire to the outlet from the metal box, is just double grounding. Run the ground wire from the romex to the GFCI, and you should be fine.

I'm not using GFCI outlets.

Then you have a short somewhere, that was caused when you connected from the outlet ground to the box ground. Double check everything.

You may have just shorted out the bare recep ground wire on a hot terminal/wire when you folded it back into the box.

That is exactly what I was thinking.
