Is it safe?

I want to replace some 20 amp breakers, with double 20 amp breakers in order to gain more circuits. Is this allowed? Thanks

It is allowed to put two 110V circuits on one double pole breaker under certain circumstances, but to just swap them out as simply as you put it, no.

If you mean tandem breakers (two that occupy the space of one), it is allowed IF your panel is designed to accept them and IF you do not exceed the 42 circuit maximum (US only). Look for a model number for your panel. If there are numbers like HOM3040, then it will accept tandems; if it is something like HOM3030, then it will not (only the numbers have meaning).

Thanks to all, I will definately not reach the 42 circuit limit. I just did a house renovation, and I am installing the wires to the panel. The electrician stated that we need to put some double pole breakers in order to have enough circuits for all our wires. I just wanted to make sure it was okay.

Make sure you are understanding the electrician properly. You do NOT want double pole breakers. You want tandem breakers. BIG difference.

Got it, tandem breakers! What's a 1900 box?

Andy in ATL 09-10-2007 04:37 PM

A 1900 box is electrician slang for a specific metal junction box measuring(no box or tape measure handy, any one chime in) approx. 4"X4"X1.5". It has various factory knockouts, usually 1/2" and 3/4".
