Are there any specific rules, or ven just guidelines for running wires? I'm doing an "add a level", I had the shell done for me and now I am doing the electric myself. is there a maximum size hole i can drill to run the wires? (2 x 4 walls, 2 x 8 ceiling joists). Is there a maximum number of wires that can pass through a hole?

thanks in advance!

There are so many things to cover in such a general statement like this post of yours. I would suggest going down to the big box and purchasing a residential wiring book. Look it over and then post back with those things you dont understand. Generally speaking holes must be in the center of 2x4 stud framework so that the wire does not come closer than 1 1/4" from the stud face. If it does then a metal plate must be installed on the face of the stud to prevent a nail from damaging the cable. Joists have several rules along with the 1 1/4" clearance from the face. Keep cables like nm-b (romex) to a couple cables per hole secure them every 4 or 4 1/2 feet with staples. Also staple around 8" before entering a box. Wires must extend 6 inches minumum out of the box with at least 1/4 " of sleave inside the box after stripping. Many things to know..... get the book and read up.

Yes. There are rules; a lot of them. I'd recommend getting 2 books. The B&D Advanced Home Wiring and Taunton.com's Code Check Electrical. They'll answer most of your questions. If you have more, post them.

To answer one of your questions, the hole has to be no less than 1 1/4" from the edge of the 2x. If you make the hole larger, you'll need to install a plate to protect the wire from nails and screws. Use a 5/8" paddle bit to make the hole.

I think I asked my questions wrong, but you answered the correct questons anyway. MY layout is simple and has already been approved (simple bedroom outlets, ceiling light) Mainly, I had just never seen a recommended drill bit size. Yes, I am consulting books and others as I go along.

Thanks for your help!
