running electric from house
ok, so ive been debating on running electric to my garage and now decided to after having to fill up my generator who knows how many times,
My brother lives in the house were the garage is so....the house has 100 amps running to it with 100 federal pacific(changing to CH). Now what is the best way of sharing the 100 amps with my brothers house and garage?
also i will be installing a meter base on my garage and install a sub meter so i can monitor my usage and help pay the poco bill.
Now i'm having my cousin do this whose is in electrical at a trade school..he has worked with a contractor for 2 years over the summer and his boss told him he trusts that he could take this on.
what is the best way to hook into my brothers electric?
Will my panel in my garage have to be a sub panel?
what all should i know before starting this?
and the 2 2 4 urd service cable is already buried and ready to be hooked up
Not sure that is even legal, the next homeowner might not like that setup. But of course, you have all needed permits???
The power company will not give you a meter for this purpose and you cannot buy these yourself. You cannot feed two structures from this 100 amp service. (too small) The garage panel will be considered a sub panel. But depending on the distance the inspector most likely will demand a secondary ground rod at the garage. And you need to use 4 conductors, not three to feed a sub panel. You must get a permit for this work and your student help cannot install it legally so be careful with the extent of liability you are accepting.
