Running Cable for new Cieling Fan

It appears that before I can being doing my basement, I must finish some outstanding projects. My wife wishes to have me install new ceiling fans were none exist. I wish to check my procedure:

I can tap into an existing outlet just below were I wish to put the ceiling fan switch. I ran a check and still have able room for wattage for the light/fan. From tap in in the outlet I am running a 14/2 cable to the switch, form the switch up to thru ceiling to the ceiling fan I am gonna run 14/3 (switch will be a fan/light switch.)

Am I correct I can run 14/2 to the switch then 14/3 to the fan?

Yes, thats ok, it will work. Also, is the circuit 20 amp? If it is, you cannot use 14/2 and 14/3 and must use 12/2 and 12/3.

I would use a metal fan box and secure it with a fan rated bracket or put in a 2x4.

15 amp. I double check that to be sure. If I am correct I can have 1,440 watts for the 15 amp circuit (maximum). There are 2 small bedrooms, a closet and the hallway on the circuit I wish to tap. If I did every thing correctly I believe I under 1,200 on that circuit at any given time (including running a vacuum).

Thank you for the advice. Always makes me feel better when working with electricity.

15 amp branch circuits that serve multiple receptacles and lights can provide 1800 watts not 1440. 1440 is 80% is only calculated at that figure in residential if the load is a continuous load like a storage hot water heater or fixed in place heating.

For general purpose branch circuits serving lights and receptacles it is recommended that no load over 80% (1440 watts or 12 amps for a 15 amp branch circuit) of the branch circuit is plugged into any one outlet at a given time. But you can use the 1800 watts for your load calculations due to diversity of not all loads being on at the same time.
