Rules for disconnected wiring

Hello,

I have received some very good advice on my kitchen reno and the decision is to upgrade all the circuits to 20A which requires me to re-run 12/2. What are the rules for the old wiring. I can't easily remove it from the walls but what are the guidelines.

i would just remove it you might be able to use the holes for the new 12-2 wire

There is no current requirement to remove dead wires unless your locality added one. You should label them as unused, and cap both ends.

This, if you are running new wire I'm assuming you were planning to rip out drywall and make new holes. While you're in there you may as well remove the old wiring and reuse the holes.

If you are fishing in some way or the other, then I would just cut the wire where you can, and tape the ends (treat it as if it was live) but make sure it cannot ever go live - the tape is just a precaution "just in case".

If you can easiy remove the old wire(Are the walls open ?) i would and like i said maybe you can use the same holes otherwise just wirenut and cut wires off in panel

Hello,

I appreciate the info. The original wiring was all drawn up into the attic and then down to each recepticle so removing the wiring is a significant task (they used over 30' of wire for the stove, which is less that 9' from the panel).

I will not be going into the attic, but rather running circuits in the basement an up.

I will trim and nut each wire set as noted in the posts.
