Rule of thumb on recessed light placement relative to countertop?
I'm set to install seven or eight 4" recessed light cans in my kitchen. Most of them will follow the layout of the countertops. Is there any rule of thumb to follow in terms of placement relative to the edge of the countertops? I assume that too close to the upper cabinets would be bad, but then you don't want them so far off that standing in front of the counter creates a shadow on the work surface.
You answered your own question and answered it right! Your assumptions are correct; not to close to the top cabinet and not behind where you would stand at the counter but as close to middle ground as you can get between those 2 points!
Answers based on the mood I am in when you ask!
I've seen them within the 2' edge of the counter below. It gave a unique splash of light off the wall cabinets and can look very nice depending on your cabinets. I've also see them at 30" out or 6" beyond the countertop edge below with threw light towards the worksurface and face of the cabinets below give a little fuller lighting down to your feet. I kind of like this approach since you dont throw shadows across the edge of the countertop toward your feet below.
