Rewiring a switched receptacle to recessed lights
I am working on a basement remodel. When I tore out my drop ceiling I found that my flourescent light fixtures were simply plugged into switched outlets. The outlets have 2 cables wired to them. One is coming from a junction box, the other from the switch (I think).

I want to replace each of these lights with 4 recessed lights. I'm not sure how to wire these up. Do I replace the outlet, or somehow tap into it? Any suggestions?

i would just re-route that switchleg, wire from the switch, to your first can light and then run a wire from that can to the next one, and from that one to the next and so on. make sure that the switch that turns the flourescents on is powered up at the switch. if its not than its a dead end switch leg and thats a whole different thing.

I took a closer look at the setup in my ceiling. Here is how it is wired up at the outlet:

2 cables coming into the outlet:
-1 from a junction box in which all wires are wire capped white-
white,black-black, and ground-ground. Seems to be always live.
-1 from the switch.

Outlet is wired as follows:

cable from junction box:
-black wire run to gold side of outlet.
-white wire is wire capped to black wire from switch.

cable from switch:
-black wire is wire capped to white wire from junction box.
-white wire is run to silver side of outlet.

All grounds are wire capped together.

I hope this is a little clearer.

I'm still not sure of how to wire this to a light fixture. Do I just duplicate this setup in the first can and hook up the others as outlined above?

what i would do is just run a new wire from that box that the outlet is in to your where your new light is going to be, disconnect the plug and tie your new wire in with the wire that was connected to the plug. put a blank plate on it and call it good if you could duplicate this same setup it the first can if your wires reach but it might get confusing. i would just j-box it.

Thanks - that worked.
