Replacing a two wire heat thermostat to a four wire

I'm having trouble replacing an old two wire baseboard heater thermostat with a four wire. The new one is a Lux with two red and two black. The old one has two black wires. When I connected the new one, the black to the hot and the red to the neutrol, the heat comes on even in the off position. I switch the wires around and the same thing happens. When I turn up the temperature all the way, it trips the breaker. Can someone please help me? right now the heater is on even with the thermostat in the off position. But it doesn't get hot just warm? Thanks you.

Perhaps if you returned the 4 wire thermostat and purchased a 2 wire thermostat it would work better?

Also who installed the baseboard heater? Might want to have an electrician check the wattage of the baseboard heater(s), wire size, and breaker sizes of this heating circuit...

Sounds like you are trying to use a 240V (4wire) thermostat on a 120V (2 wire) heater. There is no neutral on a 240V circuit. Return the 4 wire and get a 2 wire thermostat like you had before.
