Replacing a single switch with 3 way switch using old wiring

I need to have switches at the top and bottom of my basement steps. Currently there is just a switch at the top, with power coming from the light. I want to install a second switch at the bottom, but I do not have access to the first switch to add an additional wire between them. Can I use the green ground wire in place of the red traveler wire and ground each of the original switch to the box? Do I have to have a ground wire on the switch if the light itself is grounded?

I tried to add an additional wire, but do not have wall access to do so.

Thanks you,
Chris

The green wire is unusual for residential wiring. Is this a conduit and wire system (Chicago)? If so, you can pull more wires in the existing conduit.

Make access or research wireless switching.

Anothe option would be to install a motion detector that would see you coming up or down.

The green wire can not be used anything but grounding. Find another way.
