replacing old receptacles with new decora on a 3 way light switch

I am trying to replace two receptacles that work with 2 light switches. The old round receptacles were upside down in the room and are supposed to be used with lamps. I bought 2 switches that were for 1 light and 2 locations. I was told by the guy at Lowes that the receptacles that I use are standard, only that I need to break off a metal tab between the outlets in order for them to work. I did this and my receptacles stay hot - they will not turn off with the light switches. What am I doing wrong?

Did you break off the silver or brass tab.

IF the receptacle is only half switched then you break off the gold tab. If the both plugs are switched on the receptacle then you don't break off any tabs.
