Replacing an old porcelain ceiling light socket

The ceiling appears to be slat and plaster - I know the walls are because I have replaced damaged portions. The porcelain socket appears to be attached WITHOUT a junction box. Could this be right? If so, do I need to install a junction box in order to install a flush ceiling light? If I cut through the slats, how will I attach the junction box?

The lights need a box to mount to. Is there unfinished space above? There are many different mounting options depending on access and the type of cable that you have feeding the light.

Get a metal box about 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches at the front and with tabs on the ends of the opening to screw it to the wall.

Mount the box across the slats. cUT Onw aalalasllslatr slat all the way through and cut the slats on each side halfway through which should leave a hole big enough to put the box in and the tabs are screwd onto the slats cut halfway thorough.
