replacing old 2 wired a/c t-stat with hvac honeywell rth2310

i just bought a 35 yr old home and the t-stats for the ac and heating are seperate, also, heating unit was disconnected to install gas heaters(no t-stat involved.) I purchased a honeywell rth2310 to replace old sear's t-stat. When i removed the cover there is only 2 wires r and w. I connected r to Rh and Rc jumper and w to w, but it not working properly. do i have the connection wrong?

If this is for cooling operation, you have to connect the 2 wires to the RC and Y terminals.

The W terminal is for "heat" No jumper is required between RH and RC.
