Hey guys, I am a newbie looking for some help on how to change this kitchen light. It is a huge box, I have attached some pics and there seems to be a silver cable connecting to the center, I would like to get a stainless steel light fixture to match my new appliances. Any advice on this?
I think you have a surface mounted fluorescent light behind a lattice panel. I would remove the lattice so you can see what you are dealing with. I would also try to do something with the cable that feeds the light.
Pretty much what I thought you had. After you kill the power you can remove the cable feeding the light. Then it is just a matter of removing the housing. A couple of friends would help to hold it up while the anchors or screws are removed. I guess you could also disassemble it piece by piece.
A drop light would have looked better then that DIY thing.
Is this a single story house with attic access?
If so I'd concider installing I/C air tite 5 or 6" recessed lighting and bring the kitchen into the 21 century.
Do what's been suggested.
No insult intended but what are you unsure of in proceeding?
Turn off the breaker/fuse to the light; remove MC/BX cable at fixture; cap loose wires, set aside.
Uninstall light fixture with some helpers.
If new fixture is to be surface mounted to existing ceiling then you'll need to get that MC/BX fished to the new fixture location (that will likely be the hard part).
Install new fixture. Done.
ok but isnt the wires suppose to be like in the circular cut out that most pieces have..? would I have to cut something out and shove the wires in there, since there would be no spot for it right?
Are you installing new lights? That cable provides the power to the light. Once you figure out what you are going to install the cable will go to that fixture or a junction box.
"just wondering what I will do the wires since there isn't that cut out to put them into?"
It seems you are a bit new to this kind of project. I suggest going to a Lowes or Home Depot and get a book or two on doing electrical work. The basics will be well explained and illustrated. After learning a bit, come back with your questions.
Where does that metal cable start its entrance into the room? You'll have to get it up in the ceiling somehow, either fished up a wall into ceiling or down from above; that's why Joe asked about single story (that you never answered by the way).
If your that unsure how to do this it may be time to hire an electrion to do it for you.
He or she should be able to fish those wires right to your new fixture so the wires are not seen.
