Removing ceiling box

I am installing recessed lights in place of the ceiling fixture we now have. I am running all new wire for the lights. My question is the current ceiling box is also being used as a junction box for wires feeding another fixture. Can I pull those wires into the box on the closest recessed light? I would rather not go the route of a smoke detector over the box.
Thanks,
Eric

Yes.
A dessert plate sized blank cover is also an option.
