remodel can lights in 3/8" drywall

Are remodel style recessed light fixtures too heavy for 3/8" drywall on 16" OC joists?

This house is full of surprises.

3/8" on a ceiling:eek:
That must look like the waves in the ocean.
Unless you can get in the attic to install a new constrution can I be worred the clips on the remodel cans would not hold it tight to the ceiling or there going to break the rock as the can is pushed up into the hole.

No. It will be fine.

This is in a small (400 sq ft) finished basement. Replacing the exsiting track lighting is on my to-do list and we're about to have about 1/4 of the ceiling torn out to fix old termite damage (surprise!). The termite repair is being done by a pro but with the ceiling out this seems like the right time for my recessed lighting project.

The existing ceiling looks fine (at least as far as I'm concerned). Just need to decide if I should leave the rest in place and use remodel cans or pull it all down (sure would make the wiring easier), use new const. cans and re-drywall with 1/2".

My vote goes for replacing with light weight 1/2 or better yet 5/8 drywall.
