Relays
 
In what state are the contacts of a relay in, when de-energized, if they are nc. Do they open upon energizing or the opposite?

When a relay is de-energized, the contacts that should be connected are the NC or Normally Closed contacts. When you energize the relay coil, the NC contacts open up and switch the NO (normally open) contacts closed.

If they are normally closed, then they are normally closed. apply power to the coil and they are no longer closed.
