Regular switch has red, white and black wire coming from inside the switching unit but new dimmer has 2 black and one green from inside the switch, How do I connect these??

were only the red and black wires connected to the old switch?? and the white nutted and not connected to the switch??
or did the switch you removed have all three wires attached to it??

the new dimmer switch uses two Black wires (one HOT leg and the other Switched leg)
the green wire is your Ground.

Another question.... is the switch box Metal or non-metallic??

Knowledge is Power, but 240v can Keel You!!
