Red & Black wire from light = blown fuse
OK - I'm new to electrics, and having just spent £20 on fuses and driven to B&Q twice thought I'd ask for help!
I bought a new house (UK) - it has an outdoor light but no obvious switch. There is a taped up wire coming out the wall indoors so I assume it is connected. Inside the wire is one black and one red wire.
I had 2 thoughts on what these wires could be (maybe theres more possiblilites):
I thought either they are linked to the light, but not connected to the power OR they are for connection to a light switch.
I thought if I joined the wires therefore either nothing would happen, or it would act like a switch in the 'on' position and switch the light on.
However on turning the power on the fuse blew.
Therefore (assuming the wires are connected to the light), the light is connected to the power and needs a switch - but I don't understand why joining the wires blew the fuse (isn't this the same as turning a switch on?)?
Any help would be much appreciated.
The wires are probably not for the light.
Guessing with electrics is not how to make repairs. I would strongly suggest in this case you call a proper eletrician.
I agree that you should contact an electrician to handle the job. The other posibility is that those wires may be for the light, but there may be a break in the wire to the light itself causing a ground problem, thus blowing the fuse.
In order to figure out what's what you should have an electrician look everything over.
Thanks for the advice - called the electrician and we discovered that the wires coming out of the wall were simply live wires (a 'spur' from a nearby plug?). The outdoor light was simply bolted to the wall and had no wires leading to/from it. Rather a weird set-up but wires and light now both removed - and all for only £20 which didn't seem too unreasonable since 2 blokes came.
