Recessed light in stairway

Do any of you have any ideas of what to mount in my stairway?

We are redoing the basement and I tried to use an angled recessed light box, but it is just too big. I do not want to lose the headroom in the stairwell to accommodate the big angled box. What are my options?

Can I use a regular recessed can? Or is that something against code? I used IC cans everywhere else so I would assume that there wouldn't be a problem doing so underneath a staircase.

rope lights would be ideal in your situation.

my father did it to his stairs down to his woodshop and they look and perform well. he had the same 'low overhead' problem as you i think.
he couldn't find anything to work that didn't require cutting holes.
he ran it on the top of the baseboards. 2way switch wired. i liked it! the theatre never came to my mind. they're pretty bright!

you can put a recessed light into the wall going down every other step. Its not a "can" its more like a "bulb inside a box" thing.

so really you're lighting up the steps, not the entire stairwell.

WIndowguy- Do you have any examples of what you are talking about?
DangerMouse- the basement is being finished into a kids playroom so I kind of like the rope idea... it may look kind of cool. You don't think it would look corny though do you?

corny? heck no! now that you say kids, an even better idea would be TWO runs down each side. solid white for good light just going up and down, and colored tracers that move on a separate switch on the wall! i know MY kids would love it. heh heh you know what? i have some of those strings just laying around.... hmmmmmmm white, colored and red too.... hmmmmm

Track light offset to one side with small track heads. Light the art work (on one side) and the passageway.

My very first post. HOPE THIS HELPS. Go to www.twicebright.com to view a fixture and installation of same, which I think will be the answer to your problem. The recessed downlight does not require housing, just wiring in the ceiling. Good luck.
