Recessed Cans for Outdoor Lighting, Spacing

HI,

I guess this is more of a design question, rather than a technical electrical one, but I know that there will be people here with the experience to answer this.

I want to install recessed cans in the sofit along the front of my house. Is there a rule of thumb as to how far you normally space them out? I plan to use 6" cans. The sofit is about 8' off the ground, and there are 3' to 4' hedges below most of the sofit.

Thanks
Jamie

In total the front of the house is almost 50', plus the attached garage is about 22', but it is recessed from the front of the house. So in total we have about 70' we are going to do the recessed lights for.

Thanks
Jamie

It depends upon how much light that you want
I have seen them spaced every 6-10' apart

I prefer hidden lights in the (behind) bushes pointed up VS soffits pointing down

I wouldnt worry about even spacing of the cans as much as I would be more concerned about placement. You dont really want cans in front of windows, they look much better to left and right of of a window so they light up wall. So I would lay out how they fall taking windows and doors into consideration.

Does anyone know if they make a recessed light to go in 2x6 gable ends?. I've seen some houses with lights in there gable ends (in the 2x6 ladder) but i havent been able to find a light that fits in under 5.5"

Thanks for the responses. Very good point about the windows. I am going to have to take some measurements and draw this out with where the windows are to figure out where I can place them without making it look odd.

Thanks very much for the suggestions and point out the potential issue with windows.
