questions about external antenna

Hello,

I would like to install and external omni directional FM antenna to pick up the local radio stations. I am doing this because of a family room I am putting in the basement.

Is it possible to get an omni directional tv (VHF/UHF) antenna and merge the FM signal on the same RG6 so I don't have to run two cables?

Thank you,
Fred

Check your antenna.

I think you'll find your antenna will work just fine on the the FM band as well.

FM is located between channels 6 and 7.

questions about external antenna

I'm a little behind the times with technology but I thought I heard a while back that they were moving the over the air TV channels to 7 or 800mhz and going digital?

HDTV is digital but it uses the same frequencies allocated as before. Not many stations are using VHF frequencies, most are on UHF. The channels numbers you may see are often "virtual" channels. For example in the Boston, MA area, WBZ-TV is known as "channel 4" (as it was formerly chanel 4 on VHF) but now it broadcasts on DTV channel 30 (UHF) - although it will display as "4" due to data encoded in the digital stream.

You do need an ATSC receiver to receive and decode the new signals.

800 mhz is in the "old" UHF band. It is no longer used for TV broadcasting and the 700 mhz spectrum was auctioned off in 2008 (US).

An old antenna is fine. "Digital" or "HD" antenna's are just a marketing ploy.

Thanks....it must be the small footprint of the replacement rabbit ear antennas I have seen that threw me off in my thinking.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?
