A question on how to handle my knob and tube wiring: PICS ADDED
PLEASE SEE PICS TWO MESSAGES BELOW
Okay, it's a couple questions, and first, thanks.
I am working on the first floor, at the entry of my home. I've removed the plaster on the entry wall and exposed the knob and tube. There must have been carraige lights at one point, I have two routes on the left and right that are taped off and suspended in the wall.
I want to pull these routes out. They each have a wire that routes back to the light switch at the door, and they each have a wire, that I would swear has lighter cloth by the way, that is arriving to these dead points from the floor above.
So, I hope that set it up. I would love to know:
1. Can I pull out the wires tracing back to the switch?
2. Of their paired lines that are coming in from the upper floor, are they negative? Can I box and cap them in the wall?
3. Last, there are these and others in the area, when I am done, is it safe to lay batt insulation in this wall gently alongside knob and tube. It's gonna be zero this week, and the wall's already open, would love to do it.
Trying your site for the first time, thank you very much.
A few pictures would be a *big* help in answering your questions.
You can and should replace all the K&T while you have the walls open. Trace the wires back to the nearest junction and cut them off. Or better yet disable the entire circuit if you can. Then you can leave or remove the wires. Dead wires in the wall are not covered by the code.
Pics for post
Okay, thanks for the tip on the pics, born before watergate, yadda, yadda.
So, you can see the overall, there are three wires at the switches, supply, room light, porch light.
porch light run splits to left and right side, like I said, for lights that are gone now, but the right side still does supply a current light. It's a long story.
Anyway, the porch light runs are joined by wires that come from upstairs.
How to handle the wires coming from above until I can do more later?
Perhaps someone could explain the principle of the system? For dummies of course!
Please see questions in first post
Thank you very much
