Question About Electrical Wiring

I had to remove a ceiling fan to paint. When I took it off, I saw they had 2 sets of wires. Not all of them were connected. I wondered about it, but I just put the wire nuts back where they came from and went on with life.

Yesterday, I changed the switch at the wall that controls the fan/light combo, and found another set of wires in there too, with the white and ground wire unused.

Is it possible the extra wire is to allow for a wall mounted fan/light control?

What kind of conduit is in there? Is there 3 wire or 2 wire and which one is connected?

Question About Electrical Wiring

3 wire. In the ceiling, only the ground wire is connected. In the box at the wall, the black wire is connected.

That's kind of what I thought. The fan has a light, but it's the kind that has the pull string switches. Maybe someday I'll look into it, but it's pretty far down on my to do list. I was just curious.
