Upon further inspection, I traced the panel wire (12/2) to a junction box in the attic. From there it splits, one to an attic fan and the other to the bedroom - both 14/2 wires. Does this help? Or rather, how does this help me?

Know you know that you definitely have a fire hazard and need to reduce the breaker to 15 amps.
Answers based on the National Electrical Code. Local amendments may apply. Check with your local building officials.

Section 240.4(D)

requires an OCPD be NO LARGER THAN 15A for 14 AWG, 20A for 12 AWG, and 30A for 10AWG.

Electricity bites hard, and it could be the last thing you feel... Good Luck!
