Proper way to protect wire

What is the proper way to protect nm cable coming down from the rafters to outlets mounted to my concrete walls in my basement shop?

I was under the understanding that nm couldn't run in the conduit

Are there limits how far it can run in the house, for example I can't run nm in conduit all the way across the basement ceiling right?

I'm not sure how to clarify it any further, can nm run in conduit? If so, any limits on distance? If no, why can it run down the wall in it?

No

NM in conduit is legal, just not outdoors or underground as K-buz said.

I'd be more concerned as to why you have rafters in your basement.

The NM needs some type of physical protection when it drops vertically down an unfinished wall.

A variety of "conduit" including Wiremold (tm) is available for protecting wires and Romex type cable on walls where physical damage might occur.

If your going to be running a lot of nm and want to put it in conduit....why not switch over to THHN/THWN stranded? It is a whole lot easier to pull through conduit than romex....and you can get more wires in it....

I'm not running much, someone once told me you couldn't run Romex in conduit, so I was a bit perplexed. All of mines just run through the joists, however I knew I had to be protected somehow down the walls.

You must have an unlimited supply of Romex.

Wait until you try to pull 12/2 romex through a 1/2" EMT conduit........
