Problems with fluorescent lights

I have two fluorescent fixtures that are acting up.
One has a single bulb. When I bought the house a year ago it would turn on occasionally. After a month or so of that it worked properly for 10 months, now it is back to being occasional. Changing the light bulb doesn't help.
The other has two light bulbs. One is fine, the other just stopped working. Putting a bulb in, or taking one out, the light will flicker in certain positions, but won't stay on.

Any suggestions for fixing them, or is it just a case of cheap fixtures not working forever.

These sorts of basic problems are generally based in loose connections (almost anywhere in the fixture or connection to the house wire) and/or faulty components like the tombstones, ballasts, starters, etc.

Gotta get into into to really know which and on a practical basis (making the time spent worthwhile) that means plan/expect to replace a few of those components.
